Capt. Evans Carlson of the U.S. Marine Corps was Assistant Naval Attache at the U.S. Embassy in Peiping and a student of the guerilla movement in North China. Hanson and Carlson met at Fuping, West Hopei. Carlson had already visited Yan'an, North Shansi and Suiyuan and was headed for Central Hopei. The two travelers exchanged impressions. (Cited in Hanson's Diary 25) (Later, in World War II, Carlson was given command of a U.S. guerilla group fighting the Japanese and was able to apply what he learned from the Chinese guerillas. His military force was called Carlson’s Raiders.)
