PI M - POJ N January, 1972 "Housewives, the general public and"all consumers can be a powerful force...in this country. However, this force must be directed with the best knowledge available or chances are equally good that harmful, rather than helpful, results will occur from any action taken or, more likely, a great deal of tine can be wasted and no environmental effect is seen at all." -Robert Testing Director of Environmental Planning, Metal Recycling Division, Reynolds Metals Co. THIS MONTH Starting; this month, STUDY GROUPS I You will be called during the next week to find out which cne(s) tickles your fancy. Don't groanl Most of the study will be done on the individual's own; there will probably be only two meetings of each study group, one this month and one in March. The idea for this came from your answers to the November questionnaire. An overwhelming number of members indicated they felt: 1) the flow of high quality information is essential, 2) the entire membership must be better informed and more involved in the decision-making process, and 3) learning by HATPINers will be most effective through printed material or in small groups. (See the December PIN-POINT for the questionnaire results.) Study groups seemed a perfect way of following through on the membership's wishes and also of nudging ourselves to gain more information collectively about some of the areas in which we are already^active or interested. Each study group at its March meeting will produce a fact sheet which will be available to others. Hopefully, ideas for other Northfield activities will also come from deeper study of the problems• As busy as many of you are, it's hoped that all of you will find some time to participate^ This is important if HATPIN is to continue to serve the community. Description of the study areas is to be found with the Adult Education report. Channel 2 TV Thursday, January 13, 9:30 p.m. The Law and You (new snowmobile laws and how they affect the property owner, the snowmobile owner and the non-owner.) Sunday, January 16, 7:00 p.m. Who Owns America? (Walter Hickel on William F. Buckley'sx "Firing Line") " Thursday, January 20, 7:00 p.m. There Ought to be a Law (study of how a bill becomes law) Thursday, January 20, 9:30 p.m. The 1970 Census and You (the Minnesota Analysis and Planning System and its effect on the state) The February board meeting will be held on Ground Hog Day at 9:30 a.m. in the home of Inez Alfors, 815 S. Division. Do you know that Carleton1s Book Store (located in Willis Hall) is open Thursday evenings from 8 until 11? Everyone is welcome to browse or to sit and read. Coffee is available. There are a number of environmental books as well as many other classifications. This service cannot continue unless it is used I How about adding to your list of New Year's Resolutions one or more that will have positive impact on the environment. Resolve to change some of your habits this year. For example, drive your car less, use electricity during off-peak hours, refuse a work-saving gadget, wash dishes and clothes less often. All of us are polluters, but we can each learn to pollute less...and less...and less I
