It is literally now or.never." - President Richard Nixon THIS MONTH -thoughts are on Christmas. Keep the environmental ethic in mind while shopping for gifts. Consider presents related to gardening with nature, books about wildlife, and goods that encourage outdoor, non-motorized recreation. Buy gifts that will last a lifetime and have many uses. Dream up ways to cut down on wrapping. Most of all, have a meaningful Christmas! December 12, 7:30 p.m. The Pub lie fs Comments on a Proposed Cajinon River Trail sponsoring this meeting to find out easements across The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is how the public feels about the different facets of this proposal: private property, campground locations, what modes of travel should be permitted oi the trail, and so forth. This is one of six meetings to be held at the major town* along the Cannon and Straight Rivers. A representative from Itasca Engineering, which is doing a feasibility study on the river trail, will asso be present at the meeting, which will be held at Olin Hall Auditorium, Carleton College. December 14 and 16 (repeat), 1:30 p.m.- KUOM radio program on environmental legislation for the upcoming State Legislative session. December 15, 7:30 p.m.- "Hiking the Appalacian Trail" Mike Naas, senior at the University of Minnesota Forestry School and one of the few people to hike the entire Appalacian Trail, will speak and show slides. This meeting, sponsored jointly by CVDA (Cannon Valley Development Association) and the Sierra Club Prairie-Woods Group, will be held at the Episcopal Church in Cwatonna, Mill and Cedar Streets. Need rides or willing to drive? Call Marie Jensen (5-455r December 19, 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.- League of Women Voters SOLID WASTE CONSENSUS This is an issue which both HATPIN and League have been studying. League is now taking a national consensus so that it may act officially on its members' recommendations. HATPIN, with its practical experience as well as its own Solid Waste Study Group, has been asked to provide resource persons and to invite all other interested HATPIN members to these meetings. Locations will be announced in the "Northfield News" and the "Faribault Daily News*" A League of Women Voters1 publication entitled "Recycle," with a great deal of background material for solid waste considerations, is available from Linda Wagen- bach, 112 Maple Street, for 75<?« League members may obtain the same panphlet for only 30<?.
