Agenda (3 hours total): 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 A.M. at St. Olaf, The Art Barn (at the base of the wind turbine) May 7, 2016 1. Introductions: Jeb Barzen (International Crane Foundation), Barb Barzen (Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin), Jake Barzen (St. Olaf College), Joann Bell, Dick Nelson, Don Nelson, Jeanine Vorland (MN DNR), Dave Kuhnau (Friends of Prairie Creek Wildlife Area), Gene Bakko (St. Olaf College – Emeritus), Charlotte Liu (Carleton College), Kyle Berglund (Carleton College), Cecily Conour (Carleton College), Nate Mitka (St. Olaf College), Miles Tyler (St. Olaf College), Kathy Shea (St. Olaf College), Dale Ness (Northfield Shares), Dan Hernandez (Carleton College), Diane Angell (St. Olaf College), Charles Umbanhowar (St. Olaf College), Mike Swift (St. Olaf College), Gary Wagenbach (Carleton College – Emeritus, Valley Grove Preservation Society), Kim Smith (Carleton College), Paul Jackson (St. Olaf College) Tentative Vision for Overall Effort: Create a corridor of restored prairie, savanna, wetlands and sustainable agriculture that nurtures ecosystem services between Nerstrand and Dennison. Project is not about boundaries, it is about broader restoration and stewardship possibilities. Goal: The meeting will convene a diverse group of conservationists with similar interests in restoration and management of native ecosystems along the Nerstrand/Dennison corridor. Objectives of Meeting: a) to share information on what is already being done, b) to brainstorm about how the group can engage effectively in future efforts and c) to learn about resources that are now available to support those efforts. Agenda: a) Summarize activities so far (5 minutes; Jeb) b) Summarize current research or restoration effort by St. Olaf and Carleton faculty and students as well as restoration activities by the friends groups. This is meant to be an informal talk by interested people with 3-‐5 minutes per person (total time: 55 minutes). c) Hear about MN DNR plans d) Discuss funding resources that are available e) Brainstorm about next steps 2. Introductory Presentations: -‐ David Kunhau Koester Prairie Unit and Friends group: 460 acres total area, 130 ac native prairie that has never been plowed. Also has a 40 ac. dry hill oak savanna – prairie bush clover, prairie crabapple. See website for species list http://prairiecreekwma.wix.com/fopc Friends group helps DNR. Monitoring, advocacy, assist with management, apply for grants, mobilize volunteers and public interest, website development, scientific studies. Fiscal partner is Cannon River Watershed Partnership. Current Projects include: biomass removal in oak savanna, prescribed burns, invasive species management (main activity), prairie crabapple tree propagation and planting, native grass
