Sticky rice dough being added to a pot of boiling oil. Off to the side are plastic bags of sticky rice flour and the bowl in which it is kneaded with water. They are one of the traditional snacks eaten during the Full Moon of Waso festival in July. They are triangular and made out of sticky rice flour with palm sugar inside. They are then wrapped in palm leaves so they can be stored and carried around. To make them, first sticky rice flour and water are kneaded by hand in a bowl. Oil is then brought to a boil over a fire. The kneaded sticky rice dough is then added to the pot of boiling oil, and is stirred by two people with large wooden spoons. One person stirs on one side of the pot, and the other person stirs on the other side of the pot. They stir away from each other in a circular motion. Finally, chunks of palm sugar are added. Once all the ingredients have been thoroughly mixed, the pot is taken off of the fire to cool and the sticky rice snacks are made into triangles and wrapped in palm leaves.
