DimeNovels

About this collection

The Jesse James Dime Novel Book Cover collection presents digital images of the covers of Jesse James dime novels from the Carleton College Library Special Collections. The exploits of the James Younger Gang, including robberies of twelve banks, seven trains, four stagecoaches, and the Kansas City Fair, captured the popular imagination and spawned a number of dime novel series in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Carleton’s Special Collections includes examples from two of these series, Cleveland publisher Arthur Westbrook’s The Adventure Series, and Baltimore publisher I.& M. Ottenheimer’s Bandit Series. Included among these is a title of special interest to Northfield and the College, Jesse James' long chance, or, The robbery of the Northfield bank. This title gives an account of the James gang attempt to rob the First National Bank of Northfield on September 7, 1876. During the bank raid Joseph Lee Heywood, the Cashier for the Bank and Carleton College’s treasurer, was fatally shot when he refused the robbers’ demands to enter the bank’s vault, giving his life to prevent the robbery of the savings of both the College and the citizens of Northfield. As a result of the unsuccessful raid and the ensuing chase, only Jesse and his brother Frank escaped death or capture, the fate of six other gang members. For more information about the Northfield raid please visit the Northfield History Collaborative site.
